House training dogs – 12 top tips

  1. Young dogs need to eliminate often, get into the habit of taking them out side a least once per hour, including first thing in the morning and last thing at night
  2. Be patient, don’t get frustrated with accidents (and there will be accidents)
  3. After an accident, clean up using cleaner that removes the smell as well as the stain.  Your dog will associate the smell with his bathroom and think its ok to “go” there.
  4. Control your temper. It’s critical when house training dogs to never reprimand or physically punish him for an “accident”.  If he starts to associate pain with eliminating, he may develop problems “going” or try to hide his waste.
  5. He doesn’t speak your language so you will have to communicate through your gestures, tone of voice and by repeating simple phrases.  Keep all 3 things the consistent and you’ll find that your dog is smart enough to get it pretty quickly.
  6. Learn the signs – your dog will behave in the same way each time he need to “go”  typically, he’ll jump up and move to the door, sniffing, etc. Once you learn the signs you’ll have more time to pick him and
  7. Designate an area as his “toilet zone”. Then, when he need to go, usually after waking or eating, he’ll get comfortable in the area.
  8. Accept the challenge to house train your dog, it’s a great way to bond with him.
  9. Learn to lead!  House training dogs teaches you to lead him through a process and you may learn some things about yourself.
  10. Use a code word e.g. “go pee” every time your dog eliminates.  Pretty soon he will associate the phrase with “going” and start to “go” on command.  Please choose a phrase that’s not in common use – you don’t want your dog to have “accidents” because of a nearby conversation.
  11. If you catch your dog in mid pee, interrupt him with a loud NO! Then carry him outside and encourage him to finish in his “special area”
  12. Crate train your dog.  It’s very useful when you have to leave him home alone for short periods of time.  Make sure that you get a crate that’s big enough for him to walk around in but not big enough to “roam”.  Dogs don’t like to eliminate close to where they sleep and eat, but if the create too big he may decide that it’s far he’s far enough away and “make a mess
