The puppy must realize that your home is not their toilet, and you are the only ones that can show them this.
Here are some of the basics for house training dogs

Younger dogs need to go to the toilet often, so look for the signs and immediately take them outside to a place you have assigned as their “area”.

Typically, they need to eliminate just after waking or shortly after a meal. I suggest timing (and keeping a note) how long it usually is before they need to go. This is your “window” now you just have to make sure that you take them outside, within their “window” to avoid most of the accidents.

Diet is very important when house training dogs. If you keep changing the types of food they eat, or giving them table scraps they may develop an upset stomach that will definitely make your job harder. Stick to dry food (kibble) it produces dryer, smaller stools that are easier to clean up.

The most important part of house training dogs is praise! When your dog successfully “goes” outside, praise him/her using a happy, excited voice. Your dog wants to please you, so letting him know when you are happy will encourage him to repeat the behavior.

Under no circumstances should you get angry at or use physical violence if your dog has an “accident”. It’s going to happen, and when it does, if you react badly the dog may form an association that prevents them from eliminating (oh no! I got into trouble when I did that, so I won’t do it again); as you can image this can lead to some severe health problems for your dog.

If you are really having a tough time house training dogs, it’s possible that they have a medical problem. For a few days simply pet him and speak to him reassuringly through the crate. Begin feeding him whereas he is inside. If you’re feeling he’s already quite familiar with the space, shut the door for some minutes while you are in the room. If the dog reacts violently or cries, stay up for him to prevent before letting him out. It may be a new and usually scary expertise for the pet so hold back and do not rush him with this.

Question by wild_thang_831: Crate training help – shih tzu?
I have been “crate training” my puppy for the past 3 months. For the most part, he has it down. My question is about the rest of the house. When he is out of his crate playing with me, randomly he will pee on my carpet. Its not one particular place, no specific room, and sometimes, it is right after we have returned from outside where he did his business. How am I supposed to communicate to him that peeing on the carpet is not cool. Is he getting confused between carpet and grass or he is just too young to fully understand. He is 5 months

Best answer:

Answer by Emma W
Crate training does not speed up the housebreaking process: Puppies do not develop full bladder control before 6 months of age and are physically incapable of “holding it” for very long. Crating has recently become a popular practice often used on adult dogs by people who say that they are protecting their dogs. Often, however, it will turn out that the true reason for crating is to protect furniture or simply because it’s convenient.

Question by : Potty training 1 year old dog?
hello,
my dog is about a year old and i just got her. i need help with her potty training. ive caught her peeing and pooping in the house, and when i do, i interrupt her, put her on a leash and take her outside to a specific spot to go toilet. she sniffs the grass once, then sits down. i wait for about 15 mins but then she just lies down, so i take her inside

ive effectively removed the past pee and poop with vinegar and baking soda, and i know that because she goes potty randomly, not just in one spot. i have even taken her out for an hour once, but she wouldnt go potty. so i would take her inside, then when i turn my back for 10 seconds she goes toilet in the house.

i have put a bit of her poop in the designated area, but that doesnt work. when i take her for walks, she poops but only pees a little bit at a time on different trees to mark her territory or something. when she does pee and poop on walks, i praise her and offer her treats that she normally loves, but she just doesnt take them.

she is around 3 pounds and i dont know her breed, but she kind of looks like the dog on the “my dog” dog food label if that helps. should i crate train her?
thanks for your help.
i was wondering if clicker training or crate training would be more appropriate for my dog

Answer by scratchingwolf
It may be a daft idea, but haven’t you got a tent and such? Take the dog out camping for a week-end and keep the tent firmly shut on her (she only gets her own small doggie-tent to sleep in). She really does feel the only correct place to go is indoors because she never had other options as a pup. I know that kind of dog. You have to force it to go outside, and punish it when it goes inside, but first comes the outwaiting outdoors, see? It seems like the fastest and surest way around that.

Answer by ross_2319@sbcglobal.net
no but i can help.
first of all try to train your puppy with out treats this way she wont expect them all the time.
every time you get ready to leave pick her up and say crate or cage as you put her in.
as she gets older take a treat and say cage and show her that she gets a traet when she obeys and make sure she knows that you will always come back by starting out with short periods of time that you are away.

I am telling you that you need to really understand and begin to appreciate the things that matter the most to you, so right now that means that you really need to start to appreciate the life that you are living and the best way to do this is by taking action.

You must start to take action on the things that have been trying to get at your attention for a while. Things like potty training your puppy before its too late. One thing to note is that once you do get the courage to take action to remain consistent and show up every single day.

You need to start to from this moment on do things like follow the latest guide on how to potty train a puppy and then follow the instructions that it gives you on a daily basis. Do this again and again, day after day for as long as it takes to train your dog.

A lot of the so called experts out there are going to make you feel that training your dog is just near impossible without seeking the helped of a trained expert but the reality is that taking consistent action is the secret to teaching your dog anything you want!

This really is all that you need to do to be successful in anything that you choose to do. You need to realize that until you start to take action on the things that you really want to achieve you are just never going to get to where it is that you want to get too.

The first step that you really need to take right now is to read up as many books as you can on the subject of dog training to really get the jist of how best to approach your dog. By reading a lot of material you are going to be able to sift through and find something that is going to actually help you better yourself.

Once you find something that you think will work well for you start to apply it to your dog on a daily basis. Consistency is key and soon enough you are going to be shocked at the results that you will have managed to gain in such a short period of time.

No matter what anyone out there tells you training a dog to do anything that you want him to do isn’t that hard when you just focus on the important elements that you need to focus in on. Don’t ever feel intimidated by the work and just do it already.

studying how to potty train a puppy fast or even just plain studying how to potty train a puppy can be hard if you don’t know what you’re doing, the most important thing to do is read about it more in the best and greatest guidebooks.

Question by Kristin: Jealous Puppy or “New Dog” Issue?
Okay …

I have(had) a well-behaved, well-trained 4 1/2 month old puppy. She listened to all of my commands very well, and she was the most well-mannered puppy you could ask for.

Then, my new Chihuahua came.

She’s very sweet and loving, she always want the attention. We’re working on her commands, eating habits (she only eats out of my hand) and her potty training (for all who read my last question, we’ve moved grass into the litter box so it’d be more comfortable for her, but she still refuses to go).

When Faith (the new Chihuahua) came 4 days ago, Paylee (the jealous Chihuahua/Feist mx) started acting a LOT different.

Now, I have to yell the commands at her 6x before she even tries to listen. She’s been disregarding the “Not on the bed” command, and hopping on and off the bed. When left for 5 minutes in her crate now, she’ll scream. Her random “scream-like-a-banshee” fit has gotten worse (we think she was abused), when I pick her up when she’s in trouble, she screams. She’s always hopping in my lap when I tell her “no” She always acts like she’s in trouble now (hiding along the walls and corners), even when I try to call her to me. And she always kicks the new dog (she will bounce off of her with her back legs when Faith is in my lap).

And Paylee is 100% submissive, so I don’t think its a dominance issue. Well BOTH dogs are submissive.

I was just wondering if Paylee is jealous of Faith, or is this a “new” issue that she’ll get over.

Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks for your help, I’m just trying to keep both of my girls as comfortable as they could get.
Both get equal attention.

I think the first step that you need to take when it comes to the training your dog aspect is to read as many books as you really can to really get a proper grasp on the things that you must start to focus your attention on so that you can really win in the long term.

You need to understand and appreciate the fact that if you want to become the person that actually accomplishes how to train his dog then you are going to have to put in a lot of work and really dedicate yourself to your craft, that is just the only way.

You need to understand the fact that to really see some of the best results when it comes to training your dog you are going to have to really push yourself toward the direction where you are learning and taking action at the same time. You must learn to do this fast.

You need to understand and appreciate the fact that the only way that you are ever going to actually be able to net the kinds of results you want is if you stay away from the information that means nothing and apply that information that actually works

Trust me follow all the guidelines above and you are going to find that amazing results are going to be yours for the taking very soon indeed. All you really need to do is focus on that which is important.

The fact is that dog training is something that takes up a lot of time and effort and the only way that you are ever going to be able to really succeed in it is if you really push yourself and go out there making sure that you never ever give up on getting there.

The greatest method to actually understand how to potty train a puppy is by actually taking action and doing the things that are going to actually matter and actually do better.

While you are going to need some stacks of newspapers to house train your puppy, other items are needed as well. Paying attention, patience, consistency and commitment are a part of it as well.

While you are going to need some stacks of newspapers to house train your puppy, other items are needed as well. Paying attention, patience, consistency and commitment are a part of it as well.

To help you train your puppy or dog, use the guide listed below. Keep in mind that regardless of whether you have a puppy or a full grown dog, they are going to have accidents sometimes.

Being consistent in the training will teach your puppy the behavior faster. Training can take several weeks or longer so be patient.

Set up a routine.

Puppies do better with regular schedules just like babies do. Setting up a schedule teaches him that there are certain times for eating, playing and going potty.

Normally, a puppy can control their bladder one hour for each month of age. If the puppy is four months old, he can hold it for about four hours. To keep accidents to a minimum, be sure to take your puppy out on regular breaks. For those who do not work from home, hiring a dog walker may be necessary.

Your puppy needs to taken outside when he wakes up, after he eats or drinks, and during or after playtime. Use the same spot each time you take him out and make sure to use a leash. Teach him to associate words like “go potty” with using the bathroom. Use the words while he using the bathroom.

Give your puppy praise and a reward for using the bathroom outside. This needs to be done before you come back inside.

On average, puppies eat approximately three to four times per day. Feed your puppy at the same time to help develop a regular feeding schedule and bathroom schedule.

Always put your puppy’s dish up at least two hours before bedtime. This will help in keeping him from needing to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Even he does wake up, remain calm, so he won’t think that it is playtime. Turn a few lights and do not play with him. Go straight to bed after taking him out.

Supervise.

Keep an eye on your puppy when he is inside so he will not soil in the house.

Keep your puppy near you using a six foot leash if you are not playing with or training him. Some signs that he may need to use the bathroom include scratching at the door or barking, restlessness, circling or sniffing. If you see your puppy acting like that, take him outside immediately. After he uses the bathroom, reward him with praise or a treat.
