When you first bring a dog home, it’s critical that you take the time to house train then properly. The puppy must realize that your home is not their toilet, and you are the only ones that can show them this. Here are some of the basics for house training dogs
Younger dogs need to go to the toilet often, so look for the signs and immediately take them outside to a place you have assigned as their “area”.
Typically, they need to eliminate just after waking or shortly after a meal. I suggest timing (and keeping a note) how long it usually is before they need to go. This is your “window” now you just have to make sure that you take them outside, within their “window” to avoid most of the accidents.
Diet is very important when house training dogs. If you keep changing the types of food they eat, or giving them table scraps they may develop an upset stomach that will definitely make your job harder. Stick to dry food (kibble) it produces dryer, smaller stools that are easier to clean up.
The most important part of house training dogs is praise! When your dog successfully “goes” outside, praise him/her using a happy, excited voice. Your dog wants to please you, so letting him know when you are happy will encourage him to repeat the behavior.
Under no circumstances should you get angry at or use physical violence if your dog has an “accident”. It’s going to happen, and when it does, if you react badly the dog may form an association that prevents them from eliminating (oh no! I got into trouble when I did that, so I won’t do it again); as you can image this can lead to some severe health problems for your dog.
If you are really having a tough time house training dogs, it’s possible that they have a medical problem. Get your vet to check them for urinary tract infections etc.

Need “Legal” advice about Pet Laws?

Question by Britt B: Want “Legal” guidance about Pet Laws?
Feb. two, 2011
We Financed a 2 Month old Teacup Yorkie puppy “Brodi” We really like him to death….But after about two weeks of having him, He created a Prolapsed Rectum ( that’s when the inside of his rectum falls out of his body). We took him to the Vet that Petland recommends (Petland didn’t want to cover it) but the Vet produced them anyway. Had to stay with the vet for 4 days for minor surgery. We took him home, he had to where a cone for about 10 days….7 days into it, the Prolapse happened again. We took him back to the Vet…left him there for an additional three days for surgery…took him home and two weeks later it happened once again. (Brodi is only four Months old, and has had 3 surgeries) as of now hes at the Vets for “Major” surgery. they wanted to maintain him for 7 days. I was supposed to pick him up at the Vets yesterday, but got a phone call saying that he prolapsed again and he going back into surgery (four) and they don’t know when he can go home. See, I haven’t had any time with him. Not to mention that its a fairly lengthy drive to that particular Vet office and I cant afford the gas) The Vet advised me to call Petland and let them know whats going on. I called and spoke to the Owner and she rerefuseso take into consideration anything that I said. My questions exactly where: Q: After the six months of totally free Vet Appt…what do I do? I cant afford the bills for surgeries if it keeps happening. A: Im sorry but ththere’sothing we can do, the surgeries had been not even supposed to be covered to start with. Q: Why would you sell a puppy to somebody and “if” some thing like this had been to occur, why wowouldn’tou be willing to compromise? A: Im sorry but we do not know if this will ever occur to a puppy. Yes, most puppies never have difficulties. But when in a although it happens. My response back was, Well IF it only takes place every when in a even though….”WHY” cant you compromise for that one? She mentioned sorry but we cant do anything.
Q: Can you take off some of the expense for the puppy? A: OH! That wont happen ( with a laugh).
Our cute puppy no longer acts like a puppy, hes often sleeping, most of the time we’ve had him hes been in the Vets workplace or he has to wear a cone and we cant take him anyplace, we cant residence train him cause of the prolapse (cant hold it) and we are paying $ 1500 for him. The Vet is acactuallyrying to speak to the owner for us to see if he can get her to comprehend our scenario….
The owner was Really inconsiderate.

Im also attempting to contact… Far better Business Bureau, Sheriffs office for animals.

There is no such thing as a ‘teacup’ yorkie. What you have bought is a modest, badly bred dog.

Back yard breeders try to sell these dogs as ‘teacup’ when they are just the smallest, weakest dogs of the litter.
Next time find out about dogs and go to a respectable breeder.

Nature did not intend for dogs to be “teacup” sized. When you begin messing with their genes to make them little sufficient to fit in a handbag, you’re also going to commence messing with other genes, like the ones that keep their rectum inside their body. This is God’s way of telling you not to do that with dogs.

If you go to Petfinder.com, you will find thousands of dogs waiting to be rescued in your location and none of them will price you anywhere near $ 1500. The dogs will love you forever for saving them and they will not be actively losing crucial organs.

Dogs Can Help The Elderly In Many Healthy Ways

Many people end up living alone in their later years. Their children have grown up and started families. Those same children might live far away. That persons spouse might have passed away, leaving that person alone. For these people, owning a dog can provide hours of companionship and even conversation. Look at how dogs can help the elderly and think about you or someone you may know that could use the kind of friendship that only comes from a dog.

Socialization is an important part of every persons life. However, for many older people that are mostly home bound, this part of their life becomes dull. This kind of loneliness is not healthy. The elderly person that has a dog can spend time focusing on that animal and caring for it. Being able to talk to an animal can do wonders for someone living alone.

The smaller breeds can offer companionship while also being easier on an elderly person in taking care of them. These are the best pets for cuddling in the lap and being a constant companion. Through owning a smaller dog, many older people have back the need for taking care of another living creature and knowing that dog depends on them makes them feel needed.

You may not be aware of the health benefits that come with owning a canine. Caring for your pet by walking him or playing fetch can help to keep you active and more alert. The older person that ends up sitting the time away every day ends up unable to walk due to muscle atrophy. Having a dog will also give that same person a reason to get up and get active.

Visiting your local animal shelter about available opportunities for volunteering is a great way to meet new friends and to help homeless animals find their way. You would be shocked to learn just how many animals could use the tenderness and love that older people can give to them. Check for the opportunities you or someone you know could become involved in.

Another awesome aspect of volunteering at a shelter is the opportunity to help other older folks receive the love and affection that only a dog can provide. Many shelters are involved in pets for people programs that include taking dogs to local nursing and rehabilitation homes for visits. You would be amazed at how these sheltered and sick folks react to the visit of lovable and furry friends. Many of them have no family and look forward to these visits immensely. Indeed, puppy training is a way to make a difference in someones life.

Puppies are a lot of work and might be too much for the older person you are thinking about. Choosing an adult dog that is calm and already house trained would be the best choice you could make for this type of ownership. Again, your local shelter would be the perfect place to start your search for the companion dog.

When there is a dog in a persons life, there is also the need to care and love that dog. Through this caring, you would be surprised at the difference that occurs in someones life, especially the one that is used to living alone and being isolated from daily conservation and companionship.
